Putbus is located in the southern part of the island of Rügen, ca. 8 km away from the county town Bergen. Putbus is including 30 districts, most of them directly located at the Greifwalder Bodden. The coastline of Putbus extends from Rosengarten in the west to the bay of Stresow in the east, directly at the boundary to Mönchgut.

From Stralsund via Garz the "Deutsche Alleenstraße" runs through Putbus. You can reach Putbus optionally by bicycle, car, train and public transports. The possibility of shipping-traffic is often used from the Lauterbach habour. For getting knowlegde of the city a free city guided tour is offered on every sonday (May-September).

In 1810 Putbus was founded by Prince Wilhelm Malte zu Putbus as the youngest residence city in northern europe. Because of the italian flair Putbus also is called the white city or rose city. Since 1997 Putbus is titled by nationally recognized resort. To retain the classical character of the city (in memoriam of Prince Wilhelm Malte) administration and population are respecting together the tradition of brilliant white houses and representative rosebushes.

With the construction of the first seawater hot bath in Putbus (Alleestr.13) the first seaside resort of the island of Rügen has been openedin  1816. In 1818 Prince Wilhelm Malte also has built the impressive "Friedrich-Wilhelm-Bad" in a classical style nearby in Lauterbach; today thishotel is called Badehaus Goor.
Further informations of Putbus you can get at the Putbus-Homepage.

The building activities started in the Alleestraße. Most of the houses you can see today are built in the years of local establishment. The most important buildings are Palais Lottum, Theatre, Orangerie, Circus and Pädagogium.

1819 - 1821 the theatre was built to a design by W. Steinbach. The house was partially rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century and also in 1995. It is still remaining the only one across the island of Rügen. In former times this theatre became the "meeting place of the fine world". Some people invested many hours of driving by bus or train only for visiting a performance in this theatre only.
